Dad has just sent me this: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for only $1400. Really low mileage and looks great. I have always wanted a 240 and this body style with the 4 headlights is awesome. Dad said if I sell the V70R for $1000 he'd cover the rest to get me this. Now, I'm not too familiar with the 244. How does it differ from the 240? Also NPOCP? Thanks guys!
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I have learned more now! Car is essentially a one owner. The man who owned it died last month so the son is now selling it. Car has never left Florida and was always serviced at the Volvo of Ft. Myers dealer (most every service record available). He wants it gone so I could get it for around $1000.

It's certainly something you could work on - you can actually point to things under the hood and name them.

Thats what we like the most. Its 1984: simple simple simple for the most part. Very few computers and overcomplication..
I've always wanted a 240 since I started looking for a first car (before I got the Civic) and grandma said no because it was too slow for her... Ive been looking ever since

I don't even want to start on the irony there...
I have a dashcam on the Civic and after she drives it I like to watch... she never broke 35 in the fast lane on the highway where the speed limit is 45. She got passed BY A SCHOOL BUS! But yes, the 240 was too slow for her, even though technically it makes more power than my Civic

Your last experience with a used Volvo went so well, I can see why you want another.
I seem to remember someone telling me "Never again, man. I'll never buy another Volvo out of warranty again.", or something to that degree. I also seem to remember telling that same someone that the first Volvo that gave them endless headaches would do exactly that.
That's just my two cents.

I'm pretty sure that the 4 in 244 is because it is a 4 door model. I know that with my old 850, volvo referred to it as an 854 when I called in to ask about a recall.

I recall, perhaps correctly, that there were problems with some of the emissions components on this car, but that's easy enough to have checked. Hope it all works out for you.

the one good thing is that the car is less than 10 minutes from one of the best Volvo shops in the state... so I would be able to easily bring it to him first

I think that's right, it's a 2xx series with 4 cyls and doors, but later 200s were all just 240s regardless of body style or cylinder count. I don't know if there was any real difference, although I don't believe so.

The R is down to 1000 bucks now? Is the engine still in there?
That said, considering your current situation, a 240 would probably be the perfect car for you. Solid platform to begin with, TONS of engine bay space to work on, very simple mechanics. Actually I have been looking for a Redblock Volvo wagon as a second car for some time now.
That said, it's still a 30-year-old car, so while it will probably never die on you, be prepared to spend sometime bringing old rubber components up to spec as preventive maintenance.

as someone who adopted a 22 year old car, heed this. Just buy everything you need and don't need beforehand and expect it to blow within three months.

Always the Car Guys advice and mine. Minus is no airbags, plus is that that particular body style is pretty damn safe.

It all started when a heater hose went bust and dropped all coolant in the floor, which I only noticed once I got home from a spirited drive and saw a metric ton of steam coming off from under the hood. Since then it has developed a chronic water leak and now the oil seems to be mysteriously disappearing, too. All cylinders have good, even compression, so my fear is that the block and/or head are cracked somewhere (fuck aluminium). All of this happened precisely 3 months after purchase, so you're pretty spot on with that.

yup
Had my manifold gasket replaced, the hose under that exploded as well.

Looks clean, and 240s definitely have a reputation for being safe and pretty bulletproof, if somewhat slow. As others have said, I doubt that it'll be entirely trouble-free, although the fact that there's a long dealer maintenance history suggests that it should be better than most. That being said, it's mechanically much simpler than your V70R, and should be much better suited to low-cost DIY repairs.
As far as the 244/240 distinction, that's just a matter of naming. For the most part, the first digit denotes the model, the second denotes the number of cylinders, and the third denotes the body style. 244 means it's a 200-series with a four-cylinder engine and the four-door body style. At some point, they stopped including the body-style digit in the badging and branding, but they still refer to it internally – for example, my 850R wagon is referred to as an 855 in Volvo's service documentation.

Sounds like a great deal. Looks pretty good too. Regarding the nomenclature, that should be badged with a "240DL". Volvo dropped the third digit to a zero in 1980. Previously it designated the number of doors on the car. Also, originally, the second digit designated the number of cylinders. So a 244 would be a 4 cylinder 4 door, and a 245 would be a 4 cylinder wagon.

At least in my area, it does seem rather underpriced which did scare me because it makes me think it'll go quickly.
The only thing in my favor may be the fact that he has it as a 244 not a 240 so it doesn't show up eaily in searches....
I've driven quite a few before and yes, they are horribly slow. But I love the body style so damn much

Every 240 4 door is a 244, and in 84 it would just be called a DL. Although that has GL rims and a GL interior, which is odd. Does it have a sunroof? It also has the power windows. I bet it is a GL, and it looks like it may have been hit on the passenger side rear at some point, hence the paint being a different color. Maybe the badging was swapped at that time. Good cars, not the greatest electrical reliability for that year, especially with a GL with the bells and whistles. 2.3l auto is pretty doggy, but pretty reliable too.

The price doesn't seem that out of whack to me as an old car that survived the owner, especially if the kids live out of town. Sometimes the kids don't even want to deal with selling them. I got an old Accord for free when I was 18 or 19 because a friend of my Grandmother died.

I did notice the paint fade and I'm not fully sure if it was a somewhat cheap respray due to fading over 30 years in the Florida sun or if it was hit.
It doesn't look like it was done a while ago because how bright the paint is... but if it was newer wouldn't insurance just total it? Thats why I'm not fully sure honestly.
I'm going to ask about a picture of the rear just to see the badging on it... he didn't mention a sunroof so I can't fully tell there...

I'm not a Volvo expert by any means, but I'm reasonably okay with old cars/engines after a decade and a half of living with cars that are almost exclusively past their shelf date, this is like five minutes from me, and I have fuck-all to do, so if you want a second oppopinion on it in person, I'd be more than willing to take a look at it with you.

I'm sure you already know this, but the 240 is supposed to be one of the most reliable, best-built cars you could buy from any era.

To be fair, we've had a 240 and an 850. The 240 lasted to 300k miles and would have went much farther had we put some money in it, but the 850 was just a nightmare.
Your boy, BJR
> Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies
02/24/2015 at 14:52 | 0 |
OK, but to be even more fair, this is a 30 year old car, stuff WILL break because of age, and most of those parts will be long since discontinued, and won't be getting any easier to find.
I'm not attacking 240s, or calling them bad cars, I'm just saying it might not be a great choice for a high school kid who doesn't need and can't afford it.
Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies

No doubt, but parts are a lot more readily available than most 30 year old cars. Plus, parts are cheap, and the aftermarket and swap ideas are infinite. Since he already has the Civic, a 240 is a perfect side car, because it's cheap and a great blank canvas. It's much better(price wise) than anything turbocharged from the 90's lol.

I was stuck behind a 240 yesterday morning. Ducked into a side street to get in front of them! I was thinking 'too cold to step on the gas pedal?' then I realized it was just a 240... It was 0 degrees out but still... 20 in a 35? I know it's a slight uphill but really.......
